Imam Murder 'Individual of Interest' Being Questioned by NYPD




A "man of premium" is being addressed by the NYPD in examining the homicide of a Queens imam and his partner, ABC News has learned.

The two were gunned down and killed on Saturday close to the al-Furqan Masjid Mosque in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens by a solitary shooter, who shot both men in the head, police said.

Police recognized the 55-year-old imam as Maulama Akonjee on Saturday. The other casualty has been distinguished as Tharam Uddin, 64, of Queens, N.Y.



The shooting occurred on an extremely bustling road, and visible to everyone. Reconnaissance video seemed to demonstrate a man, wearing shorts and a dull polo shirt, inching up on the men from behind before escaping. NYPD discharged a representation of the shooter that demonstrated a dull haired, unshaven man wearing rakish eye-glasses.

Witnesses depicted the shooter as a man with a medium composition.

The imam's girl, Naima Akonjee, told The Associated Press on Saturday that her dad didn't "have any issues with anybody." She said her dad and Uddin were dear companions who dependably strolled together to the mosque from their homes on the same road.



New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's press secretary said on Saturday that the leader was "nearly checking the NYPD examination of this catastrophe."



The ward of Queens is praised by inhabitants for being among the "most assorted spots on Earth," and gloats a strong and developing Muslim populace.
